The fourth graders welcomed Mrs. Millie Chastain today. Mrs. Chastain was trained and certified by The Protocol School of Washington, the leader in etiquette and protocol services. She spoke to us on the importance of Veteran's Day, Flag etiquette, and manners. She also provided snacks and an American flag pin for us all. We salute Mrs. Chastain for her service and dedication to today's young Americans.

Bonus Points
Upon further reflection... the 5 bonus points given for submitting a book order doesn't really give everyone a chance to receive them. Therefore, I have given everyone who didn't submit a book order a chance for those 5 bonus points within the classroom. I will still give the 5 points that were promised to those who ordered. The next book order will not earn any bonus points, but books are still earned for our classroom every time someone orders. I appreciate your support and understanding.

Nouns Project
The Language project on "Nouns" is due on Tuesday, September 27. Students should cut out pictures from magazines, internet printouts, catalogs, or the newspaper and sort into 3 columns of nouns: persons, places, and things. Glue onto the paper sent from class. If they have lost their paper, they can see Mrs. Wilson for a new one. This assignment can be turned in ahead of time if finished.

Book Orders
The first book order of the year is DUE on WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st. This is a good way to buy books for your child because the classroom earns bonus points that can be used to buy more books! If you order, make checks payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. Money and form must be sent back to school by the due date. As an extra, students who order will receive 5 bonus points added to their Reading grade!
Also, we can always use more books for our classrooms. The books that are AR will have a level under the description. If you order books to donate to the classroom, please make a note of that when you send the order. If you need some help deciding which one to donate, ask your child to help you choose.
This is optional, but it's lots of fun. Happy Reading!

Taylor H. decided to write a letter to the President of the United States. Her concern was the lack of storm shelters available in her area. Taylor received a letter back from the President expressing his admiration for her concerns. Way to go Taylor!

Science Homework Assignment:
We are creating a "junk" cell to represent either a plant or animal cell. Your assignment is to make a three dimensional model of a plant or animal cell by gluing household items, such as pasta, foam peanuts, and yarn, to a piece of poster board. Choose either a plant or animal cell. Be sure to include all the parts of the cell and label them. Also remember to title your project either Plant Cell or Animal Cell.
This assignment is due on Tuesday, September 6th.

Fourth Graders are learning how to use microscopes!
We had a wonderful time looking at plant and animal cells through microscopes.
We examined an onion cell, cheek cell, hair follicle, and a blood sample.
The students enjoyed themselves and learned a lot of information.
I would like to give a special thanks to "Grammy" for helping assist with this project.
I would also like to say thank you to my "camera lady" Mrs. Fran!
R.L. Young is a good place to learn and grow.
